Why University Life Has Become a Nightmare for Women In Pakistan?

Misfah Ajmal

In today’s world, freedom of choice and judgment coexist for women — yet both are often weaponized against them. The importance of self-discipline and the freedom to express individuality must be normalized, not condemned.

Background
Why are these two issues — judgment and self-discipline — deeply interlinked? Because one cannot exist meaningfully without the other. Let’s dive deeper.Women in Pakistan are striving hard to build independent lives. Their dedication to achieving academic and professional excellence deserves recognition. Yet, university life remains a source of constant psychological strain due to the rise in harassment, judgment, and victim-blaming.Every year, students protest against systemic failures, seeking justice and protection. But behind the walls of many universities, the haunting reality of harassment continues — sometimes at the hands of highly educated professors who exploit their positions of power. Such experiences destroy trust in academic institutions, which should be safe spaces for learning. What’s worse is the culture of silence and denial. When victims speak up, they are often shamed, doubted, or blamed. Heartbreakingly, many times it’s other women who perpetuate these attitudes — instead of supporting fellow women, they invalidate their pain. This lack of empathy shows how society prioritizes reputation over justice. No strict or permanent actions are implemented to safeguard young women, discouraging many parents from sending their daughters to study far from home. Yet, countless young women still dream of higher education and independence, despite being aware of the risks. In Pakistan, hundreds of university harassment cases go unreported or are silenced. Internships are no exception — harassment in workplaces is alarmingly frequent.

They say, “Education is the key to success.” But when educational institutions themselves become unsafe, what kind of success are we promoting? Education without humanity breeds arrogance, not progress. What Pakistan needs most today is awareness, empathy, and accountability.

Human Psyche and Social Perception
Bold, confident, and well-groomed women are frequently misjudged and shamed for their confidence. In 2025, while nations are progressing toward equality, many women in Pakistan are still struggling against social insecurity and jealousy disguised as morality.I have personally witnessed female professors criticize students for dressing confidently, while exercising the same freedom themselves. The hypocrisy is glaring — wearing what they choose is their right, but judging others for doing the same is unjustifiable.Confidence and grooming should never be viewed as a provocation. In professional life, presentation, hygiene, and self-respect are vital. Yet, in our society, they are often mistaken for arrogance or immodesty.A woman taking care of her appearance is not seeking attention; she is practicing self-discipline and self-respect. The real issue lies not in her actions but in the insecurity of those who misjudge her.Society must overcome its fear of strong, successful, and self-assured women. A confident woman is not a threat — she’s a sign of progress.

Prominent Witnessed Cases and Institutional Failures
During my internship, I personally witnessed a case where an aged supervisor harassed two young interns simply because they were confident and articulate. When they reported it, the authorities took formal action, but social skepticism overshadowed their truth. One senior female colleague even accused them of “inviting” the harassment due to their appearance — an example of deep-rooted internalized misogyny. Ironically, the same woman excused others with questionable conduct simply because they wore a burqa. This reflects how appearance-based bias perpetuates victim-blaming. Instead of evaluating ethics or professionalism, people often judge others based on how “modest” they appear.Across Pakistan, several universities have been in the spotlight for similar cases:University of Malakand — faculty member arrested for sexual harassment.Islamia University Bahawalpur — multiple harassment and blackmail cases.Air University — lecturer found guilty of misconduct.
Sindh/Balochistan (June 2023) — NCSW reported a major scandal involving a university security officer found with inappropriate material of female students.Despite media exposure, many cases remain unresolved or silenced to protect institutional reputations. Power and influence often override justice.

So, here’s the real question:

Is your family’s social status worth more than a human life?

Awareness on Self-Discipline and Self-Love

Self-love and self-discipline are not luxuries — they are essential life skills. Yet, in Pakistan, these practices are often misunderstood or shamed.

Taking care of your physical and mental health should never be labeled as vanity. Doctors recommend basic hygiene, fitness, and self-care because these directly impact one’s well-being.

Here’s what healthy self-discipline looks like:

  • Maintaining personal hygiene and grooming.
  • Wearing clean, well-ironed clothes.
  • Eating a balanced diet.
  • Caring for your skin, hair, and overall health.
  • Exercising regularly — yoga, gym, or morning walks for mental clarity.

None of these actions should be judged. They are basic human practices — essential for confidence, health, and productivity.

Breaking the Taboo: The Typical Mindset

Social media has become a powerful platform for spreading awareness. It’s helping expose outdated beliefs that fuel harassment and discrimination. However, the generational mindset remains a challenge. Many individuals from conservative or rural backgrounds carry forward patriarchal values, jealousy, and low self-esteem — unknowingly harming others.Education alone is not enough. What Pakistan needs is ethical and emotional education — teaching discipline, empathy, and respect alongside academics.Parents must teach their daughters the value of self-respect, grooming, and confidence. These are not acts of rebellion but of self-preservation.Many older women, shaped by a culture of self-sacrifice, were taught to prioritize others over themselves — often neglecting their mental health. This unhealed pain sometimes manifests as jealousy or criticism toward younger, confident women.Awareness about issues like postpartum depression and mental health remains limited, further worsening this cycle. Understanding and healing are essential to break these generational patterns.

Protective Measures for Educational Institutions

To create safer environments for women, the following steps are crucial:

  1. Strict background checks for all male and female staff before hiring.
  2. Awareness programs and zero-tolerance policies for harassment in universities.
  3. Confidential reporting systems that protect victims from backlash.
  4. Education on self-defense, rights, and mental strength for female students.
  5. Independent investigation committees to handle complaints fairly.
  6. Regular workshops on ethics and gender sensitivity for all staff.

Conclusion

These issues might seem small to some, but collectively, they form the foundation of social injustice. Ignoring them only enables further harm.Harassment in universities, hospitals, and workplaces has become a silent epidemic in Pakistan. Many women stay quiet, knowing their voices will be dismissed or ridiculed. Yet, those who dare to speak up embody the true spirit of courage.

Let us not silence them — let us stand with them.

Education without empathy is ignorance.
Discipline without humanity is oppression.

To all the students fighting for their rights — more power to you.
Keep raising your voice, keep standing tall.
Because real change begins with awareness, courage, and unity.
