Every year on May 1, the world observes International Workers’ Day, known as Labour Day. It is not just a date on the calendar, but a powerful reminder of the dignity of work and the priceless contribution of workers who form the backbone of every nation.
Labour Day originated from historic struggles of workers who fought for fair wages, safe working conditions, and humane working hours. Their sacrifices reshaped labor laws and created a world where workers’ rights are now recognized as fundamental human rights. Yet, the spirit of that struggle still lives on in every worker who continues to strive for a better future. In modern society, labourers are the invisible strength behind visible progress. From building skyscrapers to cultivating crops, from manufacturing goods to providing essential services, workers keep the world moving. Their hands may be rough from work, but their contribution is rich with value and meaning. In Pakistan, the labour force is the true engine of national development. Farmers cultivate the land and ensure food security, textile workers support exports and strengthen the economy, while construction workers build the roads, bridges, and cities that define modern Pakistan. Despite limited resources, they continue to work with unwavering dedication.
However, many laborers still face challenges such as low wages, long working hours, lack of safety, and limited access to basic facilities. Labour Day reminds governments, employers, and society of their responsibility to ensure dignity, fairness, and protection for every worker.True progress is not measured by buildings or machines, but by the respect given to those who build them. A nation cannot rise unless its workers rise with it.On this Labour Day, we salute every worker whose silent efforts shape our lives and our future. Their sweat is the foundation of civilization, and their resilience is the strength of humanity.
