Minority Concern has strongly condemned the killing of Marcus Masih, a young Christian labourer who died under suspicious circumstances in Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan, on 4 March 2026. The organisation has called for an immediate, transparent, and impartial investigation and justice for his family. The organisation stated that Masih’s death highlights the continuing vulnerability of religious minorities in Pakistan. According to reports from the victim’s family and community leaders, Masih was allegedly tortured by his employers, and the incident was initially presented as a suicide, a claim strongly disputed by his relatives. Reported evidence included burn marks and other injuries inconsistent with suicide.Aftab Alexander Mughal, Director of Minority Concern, described the case as deeply troubling and reflective of a broader pattern of violence and exploitation affecting Christians and other religious minorities in rural Pakistan.“The killing of Marcus Masih is not an isolated incident, but part of a troubling pattern of violence, exploitation, and intimidation faced by minorities,” he said. The organisation noted that many Christians in Punjab work as low-paid labourers under powerful landlords, often due to their religious identity and marginalised social status, leaving them vulnerable to abuse and with limited access to legal protection. These workers frequently face discrimination, intimidation, and significant barriers to justice.Minority Concern said the circumstances surrounding Masih’s death raise serious questions about whether authorities initially attempted to downplay the incident.Following the death, members of the local Christian community staged protests with Masih’s body to demand a proper investigation. Authorities later registered a police case and arrested suspects linked to the incident after public pressure.Minority Concern welcomed the arrests but stressed that a credible investigation and prosecution are essential to ensure justice and prevent similar crimes.Minority Concern urged the Government of Pakistan to:
• Conduct a transparent and independent investigation into the killing.
• Ensure full protection for witnesses and the victim’s family.
• Hold the perpetrators accountable under the law.
• Strengthen protections for religious minorities facing systemic discrimination and violence.Minority Concern also called on international human rights organisations to press Pakistan to uphold its commitments to religious freedom and minority rights.
Minority Concern is a UK-based human rights advocacy organisation dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of minorities in Pakistan
