During the launch of the “Situation Analysis of Children from Minority Religions in Pakistan”, an insightful panel discussion shed light on the pressing child rights concerns faced by children from minority communities. The discussion put forth diverse perspectives on equality, inclusion and dignity for every child. Some key reflections shared by the panellists were:
Mr. Albert David member Minorities Commission of Pakistan emphasised that true equality means embracing a shared Pakistani identity, moving beyond the minority vs. majority divide so every child grows up with a sense of belonging.Ms. Zeeba T. Hashmi, Education Research Consultant, stressed that religious instruction should be a matter of choice, not compulsion, calling for comparative religious studies to foster harmony and understanding from early education.Mr. Arshad Mahmood, Deputy team lead Aawaz 2 at British Council, shared that while non-discrimination policies and quotas exist, poverty and marginalization prevent minorities from accessing these opportunities.Sister Mariam Parveen, Member NCSW, drew attention to the double discrimination faced by girls from minority communities, stressing that these intersecting identities make it difficult to respond to their challenges. She shared how children from minorities often face social exclusion in schools , not being allowed to share water, sit together, or join festivities, deeply impacting their confidence and dignity.Pirbhu Lal Satyani, Member Sindh/Minorities NCRC drew attention to the harsh realities of poverty, isolation and exploitation that minority children face due to systemic inequality.Moderated by Maham Afridi (Program Coordinator NCRC), the panelists urged for the need for inclusive education, equal opportunity, and respect for every child, without distinction
