Capacity Building Workshop on Ethical Journalism Kicks Off in Lahore

LAHORE, PAKISTAN – A three-day Capacity Building workshop on Ethical Journalism commenced at D-Gate Hotel Lahore, with a session on the fundamentals of journalism. Renowned facilitator Mr. Mubasher Bukhari emphasized the importance of truth, accuracy, and independence in journalism, highlighting the four universal pillars of ethical journalism: Truth & Accuracy, Independence, Fairness & Impartiality, and Humanity/Minimise Harm.
Mr. Bukhari stressed the need for journalists to adhere to key principles, including verifying information from at least two independent sources, avoiding bribes and “lifafa” journalism, and respecting individuals’ privacy. He also discussed common violations in Pakistan, such as envelope journalism, fake stories, and sensationalism.
The workshop covered key laws and bodies governing media in Pakistan, including PEMRA Ordinance 2002, Press Council of Pakistan Ordinance 2002, and Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act 2021. The event aims to equip journalists with the skills and knowledge necessary to practice ethical journalism.
